The anchorage in La Paz has been a bit uncomfortable. There is a ton of water that leaves this bay twice a day (called the tide) and the current moves each anchored boat in a different direction, usually toward each other. Then the wind picks up each afternoon, making for a bumpy ride. Additional excitement comes from boats
dragging their anchors in these difficult conditions creating a pinball effect in
the anchorage. Then there's the sand pile just under the surface in the
middle of the anchorage.
We decided to spend a day in
Fonatur Marina. Unlike poplular belief, marinas in Central America are extravagantly priced, but
Fonatur Marinas are owned by the Mexican goverment and for reasons I can't know, are an extremely reasonable alternative. The one in La Paz is located way back into the bay where it gets very shallow.
Ashika has a fairly shallow draft (5.5’) and we needed to fill up with
water before we could leave the bay and being the end of the season, there was room at the inn.
